"Who Will Know?"
Hello
I’m
just back from a few weeks in Spain, holidaying, writing and reading.
And…
Watching and catching up with DVDs and CDs.
Now
one of my favourite films of all time, all time is:
The Legend of Bagger Vance
Starring – Matt Damon and Charlize Theron – the film is directed by Robert
Redford.
Now there’s one…
Special part in the film which for me makes the whole story worth watching and
it’s when Rannulph Junuh (played by Matt Damon) finds himself on the horns of a
dilemma.
He’s
playing two legends of the game of golf; Bobby Jones and Walter Hagan when on
the 17th hole just before he’s about to take his shot – his golf ball
rolls about an inch from
its previous position.
Now…
Many
golfers I know feel the rule about this situation is a tad unfair. Here’s why.
If the ball moves after the player has – what’s called ‘addressed it’ – that’s
to say – placed his club on the ground and is about the take his shot. If the
ball moves he suffers a one
stroke penalty.
Even
if he wasn’t in the slightest bit responsible for the ball moving!
And so…
Junuh finds himself in this position. He’s about to play his shot when the ball
moves barely an inch. Now as a golfer and honest player of the game and of life
– he has to call a penalty on himself and tell his playing partners.
His
young fore-caddie a lad called Hardy Greaves, who’s desperate for Junuh to win
pleads with him saying, “Don’t tell Mr Junuh, no one will know!”
It’s
then that Damon/Junuh utters the memorable 3 words:
“I’ll know Hardy!”
And…
In
that moment he is defined as a human-being prepared to take whatever life throws
at him – knowing he’ll deal with anything and everyone with honesty and
integrity and by the rules agreed.
Every time…
I
hear those 3 words “I’ll know Hardy” – a shiver runs up my spine as I’m reminded
of the way in which life must be lived.
Might be worth watching the film – don’t you think?
