"The Rules Rule - OK"
Hello
I was thinking...
The other day - about one of the first audio programmes I ever listened to. It
was Lead The Field by the legendary and now unfortunately ‘no longer with us’
Earl Nightingale – considered by many to be the father of personal development.
There are...
So many insights, lessons and ideas to take from the whole ‘Lead The Field’
programme but the one that was zinging around my mind on the particular day –
was the story about the farm labourers.
I don’t know...
If you’ve heard the story before – but here goes...
It seems...
A
group of farm labourers – many, many years ago were out in the wilds of an
undeveloped country and unexpectedly were offered a lift in the back of an open
truck.
They’d never seen a motorised vehicle before and clambered on board with a
degree of trepidation and excitement.
The truck bumbled its journey along the rutted dirt road through the forest (it
may have been a jungle but I don’t recall quite which it was) until it came
close to the point where the workers would get off.
Unfortunately...
The workers – because they’d never ridden in a truck before – didn’t wait for it
to stop and simply stepped off the back whilst it was still moving.
As Earl recounts...
Those who stepped off went tumbling down the road; head over heels; until
gravity and friction halted their surprise journey.
Fortunately uninjured – they stood, dusted themselves off and laughed
uproariously at their new experience.
Now why...
On earth would they step off a moving truck? This was the question that Earl
posed and continuing he explained:
They simply didn’t know the rules.
Which rules?
Certainly the rule of gravity for starters!
I
can’t quite imagine how anyone – even the heroes of the story – wouldn’t have
realised that stepping off a moving vehicle was bound to end in trouble – but
that’s the story as told.
So – where do you and I go with this?
Here’s my spinning:
Knowing the ‘rules of play’ is just so important to our success.
After all...
If we want to earn more money – then we better know the rules for making money
and as importantly keeping money and making it grow.
If we want to be more successful in business then we’d better know the rules for
business success – knowing how to market and sell what we supply.
If we want to be personally more successful – then we better be cognisant of the
rules for that too.
To be sure...
The rules are readily available. There are all the books, CDs, DVDs and seminars
we’d ever need out there somewhere. So we can learn from the experiences of
others and save ourselves, years of wasted time, money and effort.
Certainly...
We don’t want to be tumbling off any moving trucks when someone can explain the
rules for us – do we?
So I’m off to look at the rules I’m living by and wondering if they are others I
need to learn.
Will you?
Go on then
